Unpatriotic!
Unamerican!
Seditionist!
Treasonous!
Traitor!

How often have you heard the right wing SPEW out these names against those opposing the Bush administration's war drive? I have been hearing call after call to arrest and convict protesters using the Sedition Act of 1918. (I will look for a link.)

What is American? Perhaps the principles espoused in the Declaration of Independence? Explain to me how attempting to suppress an individual's expression is not denial of a person's self-evident rights, endowed by his or her Creator, to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

What is a traitor? How about "enemies, foreign and domestic, of the Constitution of the United States of America"? In that case, right-wingers would do well to read the US Constitution. Pay special attention to the Bill of Rights, particularly its statements about free speech. Explain to me how those who would attempt to squash -- by advocating the arrest of protesters under the Sedition Act -- a citizen's consitutional rights are not enemies of the Constiution.

They could also stand to read the arguments made by the framers of the constitution in favor of its adoption, otherwise known as The Federalist Papers.

For more "American" ideals, how about Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address?

Study those, and then perhaps they can come back and tell us what true patriots are.

An aside to Jamez: I find it hilarious that DC has tons of snow and Milwaukee has none. It's about time! :-)

BTW: If you want to have fun, go to Bartop and funnel into their forums. Great place for libs to shed themselves of the normal insular intellectualism and rant and rave incoherently. You can occasionally see me post as milwaukeeliberal

According to a Washington post artikel, Saddam has agreen in principle to destroy its Al Samoud missiles as requested by Hans Blix.

Who believes him? Not I. He's a lying thug.

That said....

Am I the only one who thinks that Saddam could cut off his winky and that still wouldn't be enuff for dubya?

I think I'm going to listen to Country Joe and the Fish @ Woodstock tonight.

No great surprise here, I guess. In this story, Sarah Michelle Gellar confirms what has been rumoured: after the current season is finished, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is done.

I don't know that I'm terribly fond of the last few seasons, but the show was easily one of the best in prime-time TV in its first few seasons (now in its seventh). Its current silliness -- which I haven't watched since november -- still outperforms most network CRAP.

Ciao, Buffster.

Remind me to look in the documents written by America's founding fathers on the principle of patriotism. Seems to me that the concept of patriotism espoused by right-wing radio, namely the notion that criticizing the looming US war effort in Iraq is not supportive of the country and perhaps treasonous, is very different than the notion espoused by Jefferson, Hamiton, etc.

However, I don't have time to dig into the their writings right now (sigh)...

You can, however....Download the Federalist Papers. It is not quite applicable to the current situation, but certainly provides great insight into the thinking of the Consitution's framers.

I luv the headline: US envoy tries to heal rift with Iraqi rebels
